European standard ISO 20471 specifies the characteristics required of high-visibility warning clothing for professional use. The purpose of this category 2 PPE is to visually signal the presence of the user, in order to detect and clearly see them in dangerous situations, in all lighting conditions, by day and by night in headlights.
Fluorescent fabric
It ensures daytime visibility. It reacts under the UV of natural sunlight to turn part of the non-visible light into visible light. The approved colours of yellow, orange and red create a contrast with the natural environment.
Retroreflective material
Retroreflective material ensures night-time visibility. Retroreflective tape has the ability to reflect a maximum amount of light back to the emitting source, such as a car’s headlights.
Classification:
The standard distinguishes between 3 classes of high-visibility clothing, depending on the surface area of the fluorescent fabric and retroreflective material.
All activities requiring intervention near or in the heart of traffic flows: maintenance of green spaces, public works, waste management, airport staff, warehouseman, forklift operator, technical road agent, road and rail transport, etc.
