knee protection
Protect knees from hard, rough surfaces

Kneeling is not a natural working position. Without knee protection, workers can suffer not only from a lack of comfort, but also from immediate injuries caused by hard, rough surfaces. Kneeling involves the risk of chronic illnesses such as prepatellar hygroma or cartilage damage due to continuous pressure on the knees. Hygroma is an unusual swelling of the cavity which makes it easier for bone to slide over skin. Repeated trauma can cause this pocket to become inflamed and fill with fluid (synovial fluid), resulting in swelling. Knee protection is therefore recommended for all work performed while kneeling.

It is not possible for the manufacturer to guarantee that, with the use of a CE knee protector, workers will not suffer medical complications if they have to remain kneeling for long periods.

Interpretation of performance

EN 14404 + A1 is the combined assessment for protector and the trousers, to correctly position of the knee pockets. Ergonomic (wearable) EN 14404+A1 tests confirm the correct positioning of the pocket on the front of the leg in relation to the knee being protected during movement. At the same time, mechanical tests show that the protective foam distributes the forces applied evenly, preventing small, hard objects on the floor from causing injury.

4 types of knee protectors

  • Type 1: Knee protectors fastened around the leg, e.g. with elastic.
  • Type 2: Plastic foam pad inserted into pockets on trouser legs.
  • Type 3: Loose devices not attached to the body but put in place when the user moves. They can be designed for each knee or for both knees together.
  • Type 4: A more protective accessory, such as a standing frame or kneeling pad.

3 performance levels for knee protectors

  • Level 0: Suitable for clean, smooth floors.
  • Level 1: Suitable for rough floors with bumps and lying objects up to 1 cm – Resists point penetration with a force of 100 Newtons.
  • Level 2: Suitable for difficult conditions, such as working on broken rock in mines and quarries, with bumps larger than 1 cm – Resists point penetration with a force of 250 Newtons.
